The Vintners' Federation of Ireland is calling for more supports for rural pubs.

A new report shows that that 72% of pub-owners reported that turnover is similar or better than pre-Covid levels. The same number said they turned over a profit in 2022 when a survey was done on 514 members nationally.

The VFI say that pubs in rural communities act as social hubs but people aren't spending money on drinks because the only option is to drive to and from the venue.

Speaking to RedFM News, Michael O’Donovan from the VFI in Cork says there needs to be transport links for rural pubs.

"Transport is one of their biggest issues, getting people to and from the pub.

"The pub has become more of a community centre than about selling alcohol so they're finding trade difficult at the moment.

"People are using it, but for different occasions and we're hoping that the government, be it in rural taxis or are looking at some kind of nite-link or local link we're hoping that they invest in rural transportation to help all businesses stay afloat."
