A forensic and technical examination will take place in East Cork after skeletal remains were found by the side of the road earlier today.

The area has been cordoned off and investigations into establishing the identity of the deceased are ongoing.

The skeletal remains were found close to the main Midleton to Whitegate Road at Rostellan by a search dog earlier this afternoon.

The office of the State Pathologist has been notified and it’s expected DNA and dental records will be used to identify the deceased.

It’s not yet known if the discovery is related to the search for missing Kieran Quilligan who disappeared from Cork city in September last year.

An 11-day search of an area of farmland and coastline was carried out at Little Island which is over 10 kilometres from where the 47-year-old who is originally from Gurranabraher in the city was last seen.
