Uisce Éireann has been fined €4000 for breaches at a waste water treatment plant in West Cork.
Shannonvale Park near Clonakilty has been closed for 27 years because of a smell coming from its septic tank.
The Environmental Protection Agency which prosecuted Uisce Éireann says the water provider must now provide a detailed plan for addressing failings at the Shannonvale Wastewater treatment plant.
Uisce Éireann says it "is progressing a Strategic Assessment to identify the best long-term solution for Shannonvale. This involves a full assessment of all feasible options, having regard to available resources, funding and prioritisation."
Speaking to RedFM News, Alan Dromy from Clean Water Clonakilty says the verdict didn’t come as a surprise considering the impact the situation has had on the community:
"The verdict isn't a surprise to the people of Shannonvale, it's something we have known of for quite some time. But it's great to have that reassurance now that it's been through the court and we have the verdict that supports our concern. The community impact is profound, to have access to our park, access to the river, it's a vital amenity to our community."
