Cork Circuit Criminal Court heard the woman was left with "life changing injuries" after the incident at St Luke's in the city on the 9th of November last year.

The woman had collected her pension at St Luke's Post Office and was walking on Charlemont Terrace off Wellington Road when she felt her bag being grabbed off her shoulder from behind.

Det Inspector Denis Lynch told the court that the woman tried to hold onto her bag as one of the men continued to pull violently at the bag.

The struggle resulted in the women falling to the ground and sustaining multiple fractures to her pelvis, which had left her in constant pain since the incident.

32 year old Damien Long of no fixed abode and formerly of Ardbhaile in Mayfield and 35 year old Damian Fitzgerald of Inniscarra Road in Fairhill were arrested three days after the robbery.

Fitzgerald exercised his right to silence during his Garda interviews, while Long denied being in the area at the time.

The pair who have 313 previous convictions between them eventually pleaded guilty and both submitted letters of apology both to the victim and to the court.
