The digging of trenches for the Celtic Interconnector cables is set to begin in east Cork in the spring.
The project will bring electricity to Ireland from France, with a converter station being built in Carrigtwohill to convert the energy being sent from France which will make it suitable for use in the Irish electricity grid.
The Examiner report that Eirgrid is to begin work on digging inland trenches and laying cables between the submarine cable landfall in Youghal to connect it to the national grid in Knockraha.
A trial turning on of the cable isn't expected until 2026, while a €2.4 million community fund is being made available to projects within a 2 kilometre radius of the ducting.
