Threshold is appealing to the Government to take urgent action to help alleviate the pressure on renters.

The housing crisis means some people in the private rental market are living in sub standard conditions such as houses with mould or damp which in turn is negatively impacting on their health.

The housing charity says many renters living in these conditions are afraid to complain due to the shortage of rental accommodation across Cork.

Threshold has dealt with 800 eviction notices across Cork since the start of the year with 50% of those notices found to be invalid.

The housing charity says it's vital that renters are fully aware of their rights and if they need advice to contact them.

Edel Conlon Southern Regional manager with Threshold told RedFM News that steps need to be taken in the Budget to support renters.

"We need to see an increase in social housing builds, we need to see an increase in the amount of landlords returning to the private rental sector.

"We need to see an increase in the cost rental scheme, and look at other measures that provide long term tenancies for renters."
