Three water treatment plants in Cork are to be reviewed by Irish Water following incidents at plants elsewhere in the country..
Two incidents were reported at plants in Gorey and Ballymore Eustace which saw unsafe water enter the public drinking supply.
The Department of Housing has said the incidents were a breach of trust while Irish Water said current arrangements for managing water treatment plants are not fit for purpose.
As a result of the incidents 20 water treatment plants nationally are to be reviewed including Inniscarra, Lee Road and Glashaboy though no specific incidents have been reported at any of these plants
Managing Director of Irish Water Niall Gleeson says the management of treatment plants needs to change:
"The current service level agreement where Irish Water works alongside 31 local authorities to deliver water services is no longer fit for purpose. The issues that have arisen at the water treatment plants in Dublin and Wexford clearly show the limitation of the present ways of working and emphasise the urgent need for change. Irish Water has a legal responsibility but no direct control over water treatment plants around the country."
