Thousands of people across Cork are due to take part in the annual Darkness Into Light walk tomorrow morning.

18 towns and villages in the city and county will be hosting Pieta’s fundraising walk from 4:15am.

The first Darkness Into Light walk was held in 2009 and has raised almost €29 million, allowing the suicide and self-harm charity to provide free counselling and a 24/7 helpline open for people in crisis.

The charity say around 200,000 people in 17 countries will be taking part in the walk, with around 80 per cent of the charity’s annual budget coming from events like Darkness Into Light.

Speaking to RedFM News, Lead Therapist at Pieta Sinead O’Neill outlines the importance of the event.

"For every Euro that people raise, it's putting the money into ourselves so that we can have a team of therapists.

"For example here in Cork we have got 22 therapists that provide a service every day of the week.

"Without people doing the Darkness Into Light, then we don't have 22 therapists here.

"Every single person that puts themselves forward to this is potentially saving somebody's life."
