SIPTU members in Cork have served notice of industrial action on GMC Civil and Mechanical Engineering, with the first work stoppage day planned for next week.

The company maintains and upgrades the network for Gas Networks Ireland in the Republic of Ireland.

Due to the increase in the cost of living, gas workers are asking for a 5% annual pay increase.

Camden Fort Meagher is to be brought back under the control of the Carrigaline Municipal District.

The Echo report that Cork County Council chief executive Tim Lucey informed councillors of the move at yesterday's full council meeting, with more clarity on the fort's future to be provided at Monday's Southern Committee meeting.

The government is being warned that the proposed Sale of Alcohol Bill could come at enormous cost to Irish society.

An analysis of the bill published today points out that the extension of trading hours, along with the removal of limits on the number of licenses, will cause increases in alcohol-related disease and violence.

The report also makes reference to cities in the UK, EU and Australia that have experienced epidemics of public intoxication following policy changes that were intended to attract people to social and cultural events.

A meeting of leading sports executives will take place today to discuss the increasing incidents of racism and violence in sport.

The meeting was convened by Minister of State for Sport and Physical Education.

Thomas Byrne will hold discussions with the leaders of Ireland's three largest sporting organisations - the GAA, FAI and IRFU - as well as the CEO of Sport Ireland.
