A teenager has been remanded on bail after he was charged with a serious assault which has left a 29 year old man in a critical condition in a Cork hospital.
Ricardo Hoey (19) was charged assault causing harm to Matt O’Neill at Glenwood, Carrigaline, Co Cork on December 28th contrary to Section 3 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997.
Mr Hoey of of Ardcarrig, Carrigaline, Co Cork was charged with the offence when he was brought by investigating gardai before a special sitting of Mallow District Court on Friday morning.
Det Garda Declan Healy of Carrigaline Garda Station told the court that Mr Hoey was arrested at 9.48am on December 28th for questioning about a serious assault in Carrigaline town earlier that day.
He then gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution and told the court Mr Hoey made no reply to the charge when it was put to him following his arrest and charging at 10.27pm on December 29th.
Insp Tony Sullivan said that gardai had no objection to bail for Mr Hoey once certain bail conditions were met and Mr Hoey’s solicitor, Aoife Buttimer confirmed the terms were agreeable to her client.
Det Garda Healy then outlined the five conditions including that Mr Hoey sign on every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at Togher Garda Station between the hours of 9am and 9pm.
He said that gardai were also seeking for Mr Hoey to keep a curfew at his home at Ardcarrig, Carrigaline between 10pm and 6pm and not apply for a passport or any other travel documents.
Gardai were also seeking that Mr Hoey provide garda with a mobile phone number within 24 hours and that he keep it fully charged and in credit so that he can be contacted by gardai 24/7.
And he said gardai were also seeking an undertaking from Mr Hoey that he would have no contact with the injured party, his family or a named list of witnesses that gardai would provide him with.
Ms Buttimer confirmed that her client was willing to abide by all these conditions and Insp Sullivan applied for a remand on bail to appear again at Cork District Court No 1 on January 5th.
Judge Joanne Carroll remanded Mr Hoey on bail to appear again on that date and she also granted him free legal aid after hearing that he was working as a scaffolder and earning modest wages.
