The Tánaiste says Government will engage with locals concerned about the reopening of the former Cork Prison.
The old prison closed in 2016, however the Department of Justice are planning to reopen it due to overcrowding at the new prison.
Speaking to RedFM News, Tánaiste Simon Harris says an increased prison capacity will act as a deterrent:
"We need more prison capacity. So, look, it's always a balance. I'll engage with my Cork colleagues in relation to this. They are obviously engaging intensively with their constituents but I can see it from the Justice Minister's point of view having to identify, at least in the short term, how he can quickly bring on more prison capacity."
