The world of surgical robots descend on Cork today and tomorrow as 200 delegates from around the world gather for the latest developments in research and practice in Robotic Gynaecological Surgery at the SERGS 2022 conference at University College Cork.

Robotic technology is used to perform or assist the performance of many common procedures, including hysterectomies, prolapse surgery, and ovarian cystectomy, Cork University Maternity Hospital (CUMH) was the first publicly funded hospital in Ireland to acquire the Da Vinci robot in 2008 and are considered pioneers in  gynaecological robotic surgery.

Globally there are three main robotic surgical platforms - the 'Da Vinci' from Intuitive surgery, the 'Versius' from Cambridge Medical Robotics and the latest entrant to the field 'Hugo' by Medtronic. All three will be in Cork, giving the medical field an opportunity to view these advancements in medical science.

Clinical Professor and consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at CUMH, Barry O'Reilly said:

"George Boole the first professor mathematics at UCC has been credited as discovering the foundations of modern computing so its very apt to have this conference in UCC.
