The Sudanese community in Cork is calling for peace - as the West African country appears to descend into civil war.

In the past week, fighting has broken out between the state army and a paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Force.

A framework, officially meant to prepare the country for democracy, requires the RSF to become a part of the state army.

The recent violence began as a result of the power struggle between the two groups.

The World Health Organisation says more than 400 people have been killed.

However, it believes the death toll is much higher as people struggle to reach hospitals and to recover bodies amid the gunfire.

Consultant Paediatrician in the Mercy University Hospital, and General Secretary of the Sudanese Association of Cork, Dr Osama Ali spoke to RedFM News:

"We  want to take this opportunity to say that's war is not a solution for anything as well. We would like ceasefire to be observed. And we would like to say that the solution for this is in negotiations not through war."
