The sister of a man allegedly attacked in the city last night says her brother pleaded with his attackers for his life.

The man in his 30s was taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment after reporting three men assaulted him on Alfred street between 11pm and midnight.

Gardaí have launched an investigation into the incident.

Speaking to the Neil Prendeville show, Patricia describes what her brother said happened:

"You know they said we want your backpack and Patrick said no, I'm not giving you my backpack. And then assault and again, bottle and they start to kick him on the floor and he was begging for his life because he said we're going to finish you with a hammer and he got his strength somehow, he said, and he ran as fast as he could away from them."
