Emergency measures will be required to make sure appropriate school places will be available for children in September.

Sinn Féin will bring a motion before the Dáil next week calling on the government to take action.

They are asking that the data on the number without an appropriate school place be published, and for confirmation that proposals for special education centres will not go ahead.

Cork TD and party spokesperson on Education Donnchadh O Laoghaire says the present situation is unacceptable:

"It's an absolute scandal that there are children across the state who don't have a suitable school place and, in some instances, no place at all in Special Classes for September. The Department and the NCSE have been dragging their heels in relation to this issue. We feel it's absolutely essential that this is resolved - that all those children have a place. And we are tabling this motion to call for emergency measures, including emergency legislation if it's required".
