Cork County Council has closed a street in the East Cork town of Cloyne because a sink hole has unexpectedly opened up there.

The swallow hole appeared by the corner of the town's old hotel building on River Street.

The road has been closed and is being investigated by engineers for the County Council, who are assessing the damage and determining the best course of action.

The area remains sealed off to the public and diversions are in place.
