An experienced rock climber who died after a fall in West Cork would have lost consciousness instantly and did not suffer, an inquest has heard.
27-year-old UCC PhD student Lorenzo De Bonis sustained fatal head and neck injuries while climbing at Baltimore on September 4th last year.
The inquest in Clonakilty heard Lorenzo went climbing alone that morning and when he failed to respond later, the alarm was raised and a search began.
His body was recovered in the water the following day by a volunteer team in difficult sea conditions.
A postmortem confirmed injuries consistent with a fall from height, with immediate loss of consciousness.
A verdict of accidental death was recorded, with tributes paid to his life, work, and those involved in the recovery.
