The Road Safety Authority say Gardaí will be operating checkpoints throughout the city and county this New Year's bank holiday weekend.

Drivers are being asked to make sure they have allowed enough time for any alcohol to leave their system, especially the morning after.

Roadside breath testing for alcohol and saliva testing for drugs is typically stepped up in December and people are being reminded that a conviction will result in a driving disqualification.

Speaking to RedFM News, Brian Farrell from the RSA says people need to be responsible on the roads:

"The Garda Commissioner Drew Harris was helping us launch the new Road Safety Strategy recently and at that launch, he mentioned that since the start of the Christmas blitz, they had seen a 40% increase in the number of drink driving detections around the country. So, you know, people need to understand that the Gardaí are out there in force and they are testing drivers; not only for alcohol, for drugs as well."
