Thoughts are turning to celebrations for students in the city and county on Leaving Cert results day.

61,000 students around the country received their grades today ahead of the first round of CAO offers next Thursday.

The former sixth year students at Coláiste Éamonn Rís in the city gathered at their old school to collect their results today.

These students told RedFM News how they're feeling now that the wait is over:

"I'm happy with my results. I didn't expect it at all. My main worry was that I failed Irish but I actually passed. I didn't really want everything so I'm happy. I think I did very well and I'm quite happy with them."

Principal Aaron Wolfe says he's delighted for the students, especially since several years of their education was disrupted by the pandemic:

"Last year I think everyone would agree was the worst year in a school we ever had. It was far harder than the years post Covid, so the students have been through an awful lot, a very difficult year. Remember they missed most of fifth year and that's when most of the Leaving Cert is covered anyway, so a very difficult, challenging leaving cert for them, but they pulled it off and they've done great and well done to them all."
