A recent death in Cork Prison could be linked to a nitazene overdose.

The Irish Prison Service is working with the HSE after a recent spate of overdoses.

The service says its stepping up its vigilance after recent inmate drug overdoses.

Prison staff have secured extra naloxone kits and a campaign has begun to warn prisoners around the danger of contraband.

The prison service says it's committed to keeping contraband out of prisons and encourages anyone with information on trafficking prohibited items into prisons to contact the confidential phone line.

Meanwhile, an inmate at Cork Prison died last Thursday the 14th of March.

The prisoners next of kin has been notified and the cause of death has yet to be determined by the Coroners office.
