A rally is planned for 1o'clock today to demonstrate concerns that water service workers have about 'Irish Water'.

Last month, a deal was reached which detailed the final stage in transferring water services from local authorities to the state owned national utility company: Irish Water.

The utility will bear sole responsibility for the nation's water supply.

Under the plan, 3,200 local authority water staff will be offered permanent jobs in Irish Water by 2026.

Those who don't want to leave the Local Authority will be redeployed to other jobs within the Council's remit.

Organisers of the Cork-City-and-County-Water-Service-Workers-Against-Privatisation protest believe these changes will lead to the eventual privatisation of the water utility.

The rally at 1 o'clock today on the Grand Parade will call on the government to hold an urgent referendum - on a constitutional protection of the public ownership of our water system.
