A protest is planned in Kinsale this Friday in opposition to a mussel farm that’s been granted a licence to operate at a site just off the town’s only public beach.
Over 3,000 people have signed a petition, demanding the licence granted by the Department of the Marine in May, be revoked .
At the weekend, over 300 locals turned up at a meeting to voice their concerns which would see the farm located near the Dock beach and cover 25 hectares - the size of 18 GAA pitches.
Speaking to RedFM News, Kinsale resident Donal Hayes says if the mussel farm goes ahead, it will have a serious impact on the local area
"There's a reason why Kinsale is one of the premier tourist towns in Ireland. There will be up to 100 cruise ships coming into Cobh this year, and there'll be busses outside the door waiting to bring them to Kinsale. The town is one of the jewels in the crown of Irish tourism and the mussel farm just makes no sense - it beggars belief"
