Senior ministers are due to meet on Thursday - with a cut in car tax and extension of the fuel allowance season among the options.

Doubling the €100 energy credit and reducing emergency department charges and passport fees are also being considered.

Minister Simon Coveney says the government will take action to address the rate of inflation:

"We now have the Minister for Public Expenditure, Minister for  Social Welfare and the Minister for Finance being asked by Government to focus on how we can help people cope with that increase in cost of living without further fuelling inflation, and you will see proposals coming from Government, I suspect, over the next 10 days to two weeks, I'd say."
