A primary school in the city has apologised to parents - after a lay guest speaker made a series of provocative remarks at a school Mass.

The Irish Examiner is reporting that the speaker criticised divorce, used the term “gender benders”, and questioned Ireland’s choice of a non-binary artist to represent Ireland in the Eurovision.

Towards the end of the service celebrating the children of Gaelscoil Uí Riada in Bishopstown and their grandparents, the guest lay speaker was invited to address the congregation from the altar.

School principal Breanndán Ó Gréilligh and Board of Management chairman Séamus Ó Rinn later apologised to parents in an email.

They said they did not have prior knowledge of speech.

The Irish Examiner is reporting a number of people walked out in protest at the comments.

A meeting has been requested with Bishop of Cork and Ross Fintan Gavin.

The school had "no comment" when approached by RedFM News.
