A People Before Profit TD says construction on the Cork Luas should start within the next year or two.

It comes after Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said that BusConnects and Metropolitan rail plans are a priority first.

The light railway line would run from Ballincollig to Mahon if it got the green light and there has been calls for the planned Luas route to serve Cork Airport.

People Before Profit TD Mick Barry says the Taoiseach needs to clarify if a Cork Luas is still on the cards:

"We've been told that construction on the light rail won't start until 2031. I see that the city manager said it should be fast-forwarded., I strongly agree with that I don't see any reason why it shouldn't start within the next year or two. I would be very concerned if the Taoiseach is considering pushing this down the agenda and I think he needs to clarify his comments."
