The OPW Minister will be in West Cork later today to unveil a new flood defence scheme.

Minister Patrick O'Donovan will be in Bandon to mark the completion of the €30.5m flood defence scheme in the town which will protect more than 390 homes and businesses.

Bandon Town has a long history of serious flooding, primarily due to heavy rainfall in the catchment of the Bandon River and its tributary, which can be exacerbated by high tides.

Since the previous highest recorded flood in 1975, serious flooding has occurred in the town five times including November 2009.

After that incident it was agreed to develop a flood relief scheme for the town and construction works began in 2016.

The Scheme which included works such as new walls and embankments, excavating the channel and the underpinning of the Bandon bridge has now been completed.

The OPW Minister will be joined in Bandon at 2pm by the County Mayor Cllr Danny Collins, the CEO of the County Council Tim Lucey, along with OPW officials, engineering consultants and contractors.
