An online Change.org petition calling on the HSE to reverse their decision to close the Owenacurra Centre in Midleton has collected 668 signatures in under 24 hours.
The long term residential centre on the grounds of Midleton Community Hospital is due to close by the end of next month as the HSE says the building is not fit for purpose.
An Oireachtas Committee heard excerpts from several annual reports that detailed a lack of communal space, the poor internal and external condition of the building and the presence of asbestos.
Other reports noted that the space was adequate and the building had a low risk rating.
The online petition id calling for the service to remain open and more investment in mental health facilities.
