Sexual Violence Centre Cork says the number of rape and sexual assault convictions have nearly trebled because women are less afraid of reporting crimes.
There were 194 convictions for rape or sexual assault in 2024 compared to 78 in 2003.
Speaking to RedFM News, Mary Crilly from Sexual Violence Centre Cork says some people are still excusing rape and it’s unacceptable:
"We're still taking about 80% of people are being raped by someone they know. They might have been out and had some drinks, they might not want to cause difficulty within the family, many of the friends who do rape will brag to their friends about it, and I know many of the friends don't want to be cornered or be the odd boy out, but I think to make changes, you have to be uncomfortable."
