9 people have been killed on Cork roads so far this year

That grim figure was released as National Slow Down day is underway for a 24 hour period on the nation's roads with high visibility Garda presence and checkpoints mounted right across the country.

Gardai say speed is the biggest factor in one third of serious or fatal collisions with four out of five of fatalities this year occurring on rural roads as a result speeding on these roads is being specifically targeted across the day

The overall objective of National Slow Down Day, which is a joint initiative between Gardai and the Road Safety Authority is reduce the number of speed related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on our roads..

Superintendent Thomas Murphy of the Garda Roads Unit told RedFM News that motorists need to take personal responsibility for their actions on the roads
