Business owners in the city have welcomed the news of flood defence construction beginning on Morrison's Island.

The first phase of the scheme will take place on the junction of Morrison's Quay and South Mall and the overall works are expected to be completed in 20 months.

Construction will cost around €20m, which is almost triple the price since the scheme was first proposed 6 years ago.

Speaking to RedFM News, Owner of 3 Little Piggies Café on Union Quay Paul Walsh says business owners can finally stop worrying about flooding once the work is completed:

"It is the one that when floods hit Oliver Plunkett Street or South Terrace, South Mall. Morrison's Island is the problem. So it is vital for the city centre that they do start this, get the project started, get it completed.  It's going to offer businesses that little bit of security going forward, that don't have insurance, that they're not going to get flooded in the future."
