The Minister for Social Protection has condemned the actions of groups protesting against LGBT+ content in libraries.

Heather Humphreys says while people have a right to protest, library staff cannot be subjected to intimidation at work.

She said her department is in discussions with the Justice Department and the Department of Local Government following disruption at libraries in Cork in Kerry.

Tánaiste Micheál Martin described the protesters as "vigilante" groups who must be "very strongly resisted."

Minister Humphreys is calling for the incidents to end.

"I know that an Garda Siochana monitor these situations very, very closely.

"What I would say to the protestors is that everybody has the right to protest, but to go into the library and intimidate staff, which is obviously causing distress to library users at the time - that should not be happening and they should stop it."
