Millstreet and Glounthane are among the stations where more rail passengers are not paying their fares.

The National Transport Authority spoke to 21-thousand people as part of research which found Irish Rail could be losing 12-million euro a year from people dodging fares.

Over 20 percent of passengers in Milstreet and Glounthane did'n't pay for their train tickets last year.

15 percent of rail users between Cork and Mallow didn't pay their fees while just over 12 percent of passengers in Midleton avoided fares.

Cobh had the lowest figures, with 7.2 percent of passengers not paying for their train tickets.

Barry Kenny from Iarnrod Eireann says services will suffer if fares aren't paid:

"It is revenue loss and obviously that's revenue that you want to invest in the service which is why and you know, we often get complaints when we will issue penalties of €100, you know, no matter what the circumstance, if somebody doesn't have a ticket or have the right ticket, Well that's why it is, because there has to be a strong deterrent for not paying their fair"
