The rise in domestic abuse orders could be described as an epidemic, according to a judge in Midleton.

Judge Colm Roberts said despite the rise in applications, there was no corresponding rise in prosecutions or orders been granted, with around 40 per cent of those seeking barring orders not turning up.

Speaking to RedFM News, Mary Cullinane, Manager with Cuanlee Refuge in the city says fear plays a big role in those not attending the hearings

"The feedback we are getting from women is that they do apply for the protection order, and if they don't return.,  a lot of it is out of fear and meeting the alleged perpetrator, when they go into court and a concern that it may make the situation worse for them"
