Mass gatherings of people objecting to the housing of asylum seekers in Ireland is 'incredibly intimidating'.

That's the view of a Dublin TD as a series of protests were held in Cork, Dublin and Kildare yesterday

Up to 50 anti asylum protesters blocked the main road in Fermoy town last night.

10 minute traffic tailbacks occurred as a result and Gardaí responded to the scene with traffic only beginning to flow again after a mother who had a sick child in her car approched the protesters and asked them to move.

Parts of the M50 in Dublin were also blocked last night as a result of a similar protest .

Social Democrats TD, Gary Gannon, believes it's not the right way to get a message across:

"It very rarely comes up on doors, the issue of protests against these Direct Provision Centres. Everybody agrees the centres, in and of themselves, are not suitable for people who are seeking international protection, but nobody feels that the right course of action firstly is to blame the people in the centres seeking sanctuary here, or to stand outside protesting "Out! Out! Out!"
