A 41 year old man is fighting for his life at Cork University Hospital following an explosion at a roof at Stryker in Carrigtwohill.

The incident happened at about 1pm on Tuesday afternoon at the company's Anngrove building and the man suffered severe burns, he underwent emergency surgery at CUH where he remains in a critical condition on life support

A second man involved in the incident was treated at CUH for non life threatening injuries.

SIPTU have written to Stryker requesting an urgent meeting following the incident and say their member have previously raised health and safety concerns.

Speaking to RedFM News Neil McGowan from SIPTU says they have been seeking to engage with them for nearly four years now.

"To date the company have failed to engage with us, they've failed to agree to a meeting.

"We hope that following the letter that has been sent to the company that they will sit down and engage with us.

"Our members have serious concerns around health and safety issues,  and we want to sit down with management and work in a collaborative fashion to ensure that Stryker have the best safety systems on place that are possible, and that the workplace is as safe as it possibly can be."
