A 47-year-old man who was found guilty of the rape and sexual assault of his sister when they were children has been jailed for two and half years.
Emmett Baylor of Hilltop, Youghal, county Cork appeared at the Central Criminal Court in Cork today.
In a victim impact statement last week, 41-year-old Niamh Herbert said she reported her adoptive brother to Gardaí out of the ‘crushing fear’ he might be hurting other children.
Speaking outside court, Ms Herbert said the path to justice has been one of the most difficult of her life:
"It feels like you have to give away a piece of yourself every step of the way and there are days when you feel like you have no more to give, but I’m glad I kept going, one step at a time, holding my head high with respect and dignity. I stand here today not as a victim, but as a strong woman who has got her long-overdue justice. The jury gave me justice when they came back with the guilty verdict- thank you for believing in me."
