A 56 year old father of ten has been jailed for nine years - for his part in an incident in which Gardaí in Cork where shot at - by a home made slam bang shot gun

His son has been jailed for four years for the same incident.

"ames Keenan of Island View, Rochestown, Cork, pleaded guilty at Cork Circuit Criminal Court today to four offences including possession of an improvised shotgun.

His 28-year-old son, Peter pleaded guilty to three offences on the same occasion.

Gardaí had called to the house with a search warrant on the 29th April 2021.

Det Insp Danny Coholan told the court that a team of Armed Support Unit officers identified themselves as Gardaí when breaching the door.

One of the officers, Garda Emma Hennebry, saw James Keenan point an improvised shotgun at her, and fire a shot as she stood in the doorway of the sitting room.

The shot missed her, but hit the door.

Garda Hennebry suffered soft tissue injuries.

The officers did not fire their weapons.

Gardaí then arrested James and Peter Keenan, as well as two other members of the family, John and Michael James.

Defence counsel for James Keenan, Tom Creed said that the Keenans were involved in a feud with the McDonagh Family at the time - and that James Keenan thought it was the McDonaghs coming to attack them.

He said that James Keenan apologised immediately once he realised that it was the Gardaí.

Judge Helen Boyle said that it was a serious incident - more akin to downtown Los Angeles than the Rochestown Road, and sentenced James Keenan to ten years but suspended the final 12 months - and sentenced Peter Keenan to five years with the last year suspended.

She adjourned sentencing against the two other family members for a year - as neither had come to Garda attention since the incident.
