A 25-year-old man has appeared in court in Cork charged with the murder of his mother and assault causing harm to his father on Monday night.
David Gallagher of Shrewsbury Downs, Ballinlough, Cork city appeared at Cork District Court this afternoon.
59-year-old Stella Gallagher died at Cork University Hospital on Monday night while her husband, Brian, was also taken to CUH for treatment.
Detective Sergeant Niall Hayes gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution and said the accused made no reply when the charges were put to him.
Defence solicitor Shane Collins-Daly said his client has been seen by a doctor on average every eight hours and was given medication.
Mr Collins-Daly applied for David Gallagher to receive urgent medical and psychiatric evaluation while in custody.
Judge John King granted the application, and remanded Mr Gallagher in custody to appear before the court again on the 26th via video link.
David Gallagher did not speak during the brief hearing.
