A local County Councillor in Berrings has described the deep fog of sadness that has descended on the village following the killing of 89 year old Matthew Healy.
The retired farmer died after being violently assaulted in a general ward at the Mercy University Hospital at around 5:30 yesterday morning.
Matthew’s wife Delia died three weeks ago, and the couple are survived by their three adult children and eight grandchildren.
A 32 year old man was arrested in relation to the investigation and remains in Garda custody today.
Cllr Michael Looney knew Matthew Healy for 40 years.
He told RedFM News that people are still trying to come to terms with the tragedy:
