There is only one property for rent in Cork city and county that falls within the Housing Assistance Payment rate.

The Simon Community is calling on the government to increase the HAP rate after a new report by the charity shows that the number of properties available to rent within HAP rates has dropped by 79%.

Simon Communities says a stark crisis is emerging in regions outside of Dublin, such as Cork as the number of people experiencing homelessness also increases.

Spokesperson, Wayne Stanley, says the lack of affordable rental properties is a widespread problem.

"There are only 190 properties available within the HAP rates, and that includes where you include the discretion available to the local authorities.

"We're seeing in Athlone there are no properties within a HAP rate at all, Cork city no HAP rates, Cork city centre and suburbs combined only one property is within HAP rates."
