The Irish Penal Reform Trust is renewing its call for urgent action to address overcrowding in prisons.
The Office of the Inspector of Prisons' annual report for 2024 states conditions for some inmates are "inhumane" and "degrading".
31 prisoners died while in custody - a record high - five of those deaths were at Cork Prison
Executive Director of the Irish Penal Reform Trust, Saoirse Brady says the report paints a very bleak picture:
"I'm talking about people having to sleep three or four to a cell that's the size of a car park space. They're sleeping beside an open toilet, sometimes without a lid on it, that they all have to use. People are eating on the floor. They're eating standing up because there's not enough room for them to sit down. It's really concerning, and it's degrading and inhumane"
