An Irish charity has sent a team of surgeons to perform life changing surgery on children in Ukraine.
Chernobyl Children International sent the team of cardiac surgeons to the war torn country to help new-borns with congenital heart defects.
The team landed in Krakow and travelled to Le-viv by bus and brought equipment including oxygenators that stop the flow of blood to the heart to repair congenital heart defects such as ‘Chernobyl Heart’.
Speaking to RedFM News, Adi Roche of Chernobyl Children International said that the children's families can't flee the war because of their heart condition:
"This team of wonderful heroes, a 12 strong team funded by the people of Ireland has been working night and day in surgery, some of which have lasted 12 and 13 hours. They arrived on the fifth of December to discover a one day old baby who was on death's door that would not have survived if they hadn't been there with the equipment with the medicines and the know how. And they saved the life of that baby along with so many others."
