Ireland's fishing industry is the most dangerous sector in which to work in Ireland.
Twenty four people have died in the sector between 2015 and 2024 prompting today's roll out by the Health and Safety Authority of a national sea fishing inspection campaign.
Speaking to RedFM News, Senior Inspector with the HSA Ger Hartnett says even a minor mistake by a fisherman can have serious consequences:
"It's a very high risk workplace. You're out at sea, you're on a moving platform, you're dealing with machinery equipment, nets, you're dealing with extreme weather conditions so there are significant hazards, not only in the workplace but obviously the external environment as well."
