Gino Kenny was responding to a case in Cork, where a man was sentenced to three months in prison for €25 worth of the drug.

Gardaí stopped and searched the person in July 2020, and that sentence will run concurrently to another for an unrelated offence.

Deputy Kenny says it's beyond ridiculous that someone can get prison time for possession of such a small amount of cannabis:

"I don't know what purpose serves to anybody, regardless of what you think, in relation to drug reform in Ireland. The present laws around, particularly cannabis use, are completely antiquated and they need to be fundamentally changed. And hopefully that will happen over the next couple of years."
