An inquest has heard a 56-year-old Cork man died of a ‘massive allergic reaction’ after being stung by wasps up to six times last year.

Michael Sheehan died at his home in Glen Tanar, Carriganine in Macroom on the 5th of November.

Mick Sheehan was stung on his head, back and arms when he went into his garden to help two men who were cutting a hedge.

Dr Margaret Bolster said Mr Sheehan had elevated levels of tryptase, which can be a marker of a severe anaphylactic reaction, and had suffered a swelling of the larynx which caused him to collapse very suddenly.

Coroner Frank O’Connell recorded a verdict of accidental death and said it was “most unfortunate” he had died while “innocently picking up hedge clippings.”
