Inland Fisheries Ireland has described the loss of 5000 fish from the River Allow in Kanturk as heartbreaking.

An investigation is underway by the agency responsible for the protection and conservation of freshwater fish after the North Cork river became contaminated.

Uisce Eireann has a water treatment plan nearby in Freemount and is investigating a reported spillage at the plant.

Speaking to RedFM News, Sean Long says Inland Fisheries Ireland is continuing to determine the loss of thousands of fish in the area:

"For everyone involved in the fisheries or any stakeholders along the river, it's absolutely heartbreaking. it's an abundant sporting river for salmonids, for salmon and for trout. Seeing the mortalities in the river, you just see how abundant it was with fish life. I mean, we're talking thousands upon thousands.
