The Irish Blood Transfusion Service has issued an urgent appeal as blood supplies have fallen to just 3 days.
This means an additional 2,000 donations will be needed in June alone.
The IBTS says most blood groups have fallen to just 3 days worth of supply of in recent weeks, instead of the 7-day stockpile the service aims to have at all times.
IBTS Director of Donor Services and Logistics, Paul McKinney says nearly 400 extra donations per week are needed to meet demand.

Only 3% of the eligible population are blood donors but it is estimated 1 in 4 people will need a blood transfusion at some point in their lives.
