It's emerged the so called 'Robot Trees' removed from the city centre last month were offered to Iarnród Éireann who turned them down due to safety concerns.

Information released by Cork City Council following a freedom of information request by Sinn Fein TD Thomas Gould also reveals the devices, repairs and maintenance cost just over €444,363.

Speaking to RedFM News, Deputy Thomas Gould says the money could have been spent on so many other things:

"At a time when people are crying now for housing maintenance, for parks, for playgrounds, to fix footpaths that were broken all over the city and for proper trees to be installed, we see the Government just wasting money again."
