The HSE has appealed the closure of seven mental health beds at Bantry General Hospital.
The Mental Health Commission instructed the Executive to reduce the number of people who can be treated at the unit from 18 to 11 following concerns about the building.
Inspectors found the centre on the grounds of the hospital was not fit for purpose following several inspections.
Cork TD Christopher O'Sullivan confirmed the move by the HSE yesterday and said the appeal was submitted along with short and long term plans to improve the centre.
