The Housing Minister says the government's plans to tackle the housing crisis are ambitious.

Minister Darragh O'Brien was speaking in Carrigtwohill at the ribbon cutting for 95 two-bed apartments that were delivered by Co-Operative Housing Ireland.

The units will be provided to people and families who have been living in emergency accommodation or who are at risk of homelessness.

Cork Chamber of Commerce has warned that a large cohort of the working population will still remain locked out of the housing market and are calling for more ambitious measures to tackle the housing crisis.

Speaking to RedFM News, Minister Darragh O'Brien outlines his department's plan for this year:

"We'll be investing, this year, close to €5 billion in housing. The state is the biggest single actor and investor in housing. And we are turning the corner in that delivery. And the Chambers of Commerce will understand this too, because we are playing catch up. We had issues certainly with regard to COVID, with a 20-week construction shutdown, but even with that, we were able to exceed our targets last year. What we announced this week, in relation to further activation activation measures, around the waiving of Development Levy, and Water Connection Charges is very, very significant. And that applies to everybody".
